Alzheimer's Disease Is Taking My Wife

To my wife Janice of fifty years,
Age has brought on our fears.
That one of us would fail,
I wish it were not your rail.
I would gladly take your place,
If I were able to change my face.
To the many enjoyable years together,
Though time whisked by, like a lead feather.
We started out and achieved that which,
God endeavored us together to stitch.
Through good times and bad times we weathered,
For I did find a perfect mate to be tethered.
To love and cherish you to the end,
Is a vow I have taken to defend.
So is Alzheimer's a challenge for me?
No, because I am in love with you, you see.
As my beautiful wife of fifty years,
You have certainly removed all of my fears.
I will worship you for the rest of our days,
You have shown me so many wonderful ways.

Tom Craighead was born in a pre-revolutionary home in the tiny hamlet of Cross River, NY in 1934. His first schooling was in one-room schoolhouse. In the military, he served in the Army 11th Airborne Division Paratroopers during the Korean Conflict. While in the Army, he married his high school sweetheart. On July 2, 1984, Tom crashed his ultralite airplane in vertical flight into the ground, saved only by God and hitting a swamp and eight hours of surgery. He is most proud of the fact that he is an original American skydiver being one of the first ten in the sport in America, and marvels at the progress and numbers of people following in his footsteps and their dream. "And I owe all of my successes to my wonderful wife of 50 years, Janice."
